Aaron Sorkin is Facebook Movie

Aaron Sorkin is writing a movie about Facebook. That’s right, Facebook. On the same night Mr. Sorkin’s name is mentioned in Barack Obama’s Presidential speech analysis, his Facebook page surfaces. Check out his entry below.

Aaron Sorkin

Aaron Sorkin is Facebook Movie

Sorkin has declined to comment, but Sony Pictures has confirmed the project. The film is based on the popularity and sometimes controversial history of the web site. There has been much speculation as to whether it’s actually Sorkin who made the page, but NY Mag says it really is him. This is what he writes:

Welcome. I’m Aaron Sorkin. I understand there are a few other people using Facebook pages under my name–which I find more flattering than creepy–but this is me. I don’t know how I can prove that but feel free to test me.

I’ve just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I’ve started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she’s been dead for 33 years.)

You can read the rest of Sorkin’s facebook entry below. I’m not sure about the choice of Sorkin. There’s not another quality Hollywood writer out there who is at least familiar with Facebook? Or maybe the better question, why are they writing a movie on Facebook?

Cher is Catwoman?

Everyone is already talking about the next Batman movie and this news will just fuel that fire. Cher is reportedly in talks to play Catwoman. Good choice, she probably already has the costume in her closet.

Cher

Cher is Catwoman?

The follow up to “The Dark Knight” is supposed to hit theaters by 2011. The studio is rumored to want both director Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale back.

“The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters.”

As for Catwoman, the 62-year-old Cher may follow in the footsteps of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, but with a totally different twist on the character. A studio executive said:

“Cher is Nolan’s first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years. The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry’s purring creations.”

Hmm, twilight years. That’s a nice way to say it. They could have also said her first acting gig came over 30 years ago in “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” Eventhough Cher is older, I think she’d be a great choice. She’s made some classics over the years. Remember “Mermaids” and “Tea with Mussolini?”

You can see more photos of Cher and her greatest video of all-time below. Love her!

Diana Quick is an English actress and the long-time girlfriend of Bill Nighy. You can see her biography, photos and video of Bill below.

Quick and Nighy’s relationship of 27 years has come to an end. Demanding work schedules are thought to be the reason behind the separation. Bill has spent months away from home in recent years filming.

“‘Bill and Diana separated amicably. They remain great friends.’ They denied that a third party was involved in the demise of their relationship.”

Diana is said to have saved Bill from a drinking problem years ago and the two have a 24-year-old daughter together. Although the two were never married, Diana has described Bill “as her ‘de facto husband’ or POSSLQ - Person of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters.

Diana Quick Biography

Quick was born November 23, 1946, which makes her age 61. She grew up in Kent but now makes her home in London. Diana began acting at a young age and was the president of the Oxford University Dramatic Society, the first female to take on that role.

At 17, Quick joined the National Youth Theatre. Her most famous role came in 1981 when she played Julia Flyte in “Brideshead Revisited.” That was also the same year she met Bill. They were both performing at the National Theatre. She was the more famous of the two at the time appearing on magazines with captions like ‘Is this the most beautiful women in the world?’

As a filmography, Quick has appeared in such movies as “The Discovery of Heaven,” “Saving Grace” and “The Odd Job.” Diana has also starred in several television shows including “Dr. Who” and “Sensitive Skin.” With all their acting and time apart, being faithfull doesn’t seem to be a question. Quick described her take on that issue a couple years ago.

“Physical passion was important to me when I was younger, but I find I don’t really need it in my life anymore. Once in a while the chance to have an affair comes my way, but it doesn’t tempt me.”

The two have been together so long, hopefully things will work out. You can see photos and video of Nighy in the role that made him famous, Billy Mack, in “Love Actually” below.

Child’s Play Remake

The scariest horror movie of my childhood (at least it freaked the hell out of me when I was eight) is back for more. After “Child’s Play”, I couldn’t be alone in the room with my brother’s My Buddy doll. Even Kid Sister barely made the cut. Was I that big of a wuss, or was that scene where the batteries fell on the floor some really scary stuff? We’ll see if the Child’s Play remake is as scary as the first. I bet that doll is more realistic at least.

Child s Play

“Child’s Play” Remake

Rumors of the remake have been floating around since October 2007, but now it’s being confirmed - the Chucky doll is back for a redo of the original “Child’s Play” movie. Creator Don Mancini will write and direct the film. He assures fans that the original voice will remain, as Brad Dourif returns as Chucky. The director says,

“I think what we are mainly responding to, David [Kirschner, producer] and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy.”

The classic horror flick is set to drop in 2010.

Ben Affleck is Mike Judge’s “Extract”

Ben Affleck is returning to the big screen in Mike Judge’s new comedy “Extract.” He will star alongside Jason Bateman and Mila Kunis.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck is Mike Judge’s “Extract”

Affleck has had a string of sub-par box office performances in the past several years, with the exception of “Hollywoodland.” Now, he’s looking to turn that streak around with “Extract” and his recent performances set to come out in 2009.

“State of Play,” based on the BBC mini-series about reporters and a detective joining forces to solve the murder of a congressman’s mistress, is scheduled to release in April. Jason Bateman will also be in this film. Affleck’s other film, “He’s Just Not That Into You,” is set to release in February.

As for “Extract,” Affleck will play an “ambulance-chasing lawyer” and best friend of Bateman, “a flower extract owner dealing with workplace problems and a streak of bad luck, including his wife’s affair with a gigolo.” Clifton Collin’s Jr. and Kristen Wiig have also signed on for the project.

You can see more pictures and video of Affleck below.

Veronica Mars the Movie?

“Veronica Mars” the tv show may soon be “Veronica Mars: The Movie” if creator Rob Thomas has anything to do about it. A VM film is something fans have been petitioning for a long time and now they just might get their wish.

Kristen Bell

Veronica Mars - Kristen Bell

Thomas and Kristen Bell sat down to discuss the future of VM on the big screen. Although Rob has two other projects that need his attention right now, he says, “…as soon as I have any free time, that’s my top priority.”

“Kristen and I ran into each other, and we did discuss a Veronica movie,” confirms Thomas, who says he has also had “a few conversations” with Mars executive producer Joel Silver.

Kristen seems gung ho to make the film, mentioning it several times in interviews. She’d also like to see it done sooner that later.

“As long as [Rob Thomas] knows we’d all be game, I hope one day he does do it, before we get too old.”

Sounds like the die hard fans are starting to be heard. I think it’d be a great movie. Way better than some of the crap being made today. Plus, Kristen Bell is great. If a film never happens, at least we can see her in “Heroes.” You can see more photos of the lovely Kristen and a video that sums up Veronica Mars below.

DVDs Releasing This Week - August 19

I hope you’re a Disney fan if you’re looking to rent a new DVD today. The DVDs releasing this week are perfect for your 7th-grader;s back to school sleep over. We’ve got the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus to rock your televisions. And some Keanu Reeves if you like that sort of thing.

Camp Rock

Camp Rock

Camp Rock

For anyone with a future on the stage, there’s only one place to spend the summer … Camp Rock! Yep, that’s the tag line. Starring the Jonas Brothers and Disney star Demi Lovato, the movie follows a bunch of young up-and-coming stars on their quest for Camp Rock greatness. A little bit love story, a little bit teen comedy, and a lot of singing and dancing, Camp Rock is sure to keep the kids entertained.

Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie

If you like Hannah Montana, you’ll like the 3-D Movie. It’s been a while since I was seen sporting some 3-D glasses, but maybe it’s about time I try them on again. With Miley Cyrus and her alter ego, you get the best of both worlds, mix it all together and you know that it’s the best of both worlds.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

This movie looks like a cross between “Nanny Diaries” and “Down with Love”. With the musical and light-hearted talents of Amy Adams and the comical greatness of Frances McDormand (who doesn’t love her, really?), “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” looks to be a winner. In the film, career nanny Miss Pettigrew finds herself fired and looking for work, and in her desperation takes a job as “social secretary” for an American actress and singer. In the unfamiliar world of glitz and glamor, Pettigrew finds herself navigating quite well and helping her new friend in love, life and work along the way. 77% of critics agree that this flick scores big.

Street Kings

Keanu Reeves is back, this time playing an outside-the-lines cop as part of a group of officers who take justice into their own hands. But when the good cops rat out these “Street Kings”, it’s Keanu who takes the fall. And it’s Forest Whitaker who sells him out. But in typical Reeves fashion, the critics aren’t buying it. Lots of fun action it looks like, but not a lot of acting chops.

Alison Carroll is the New Lara Croft

Meet Alison Carroll, a former receptionist and experienced gymnast, who will now play Lara Croft. She will take over the role that Angelina Jolie made famous. You can see Carroll’s biography, photos and video below.

Alison Carroll

Alison Carroll

Alison beat out hundreds of women to become the new face of “Tomb Raider: Underworld.” She will now travel the world promoting the character for the next year.

“Featuring the essential characteristics at the core of Lara Croft’s personality — brawn, brains and beauty — Alison Carroll particularly complements this iteration of Ms. Croft. Tomb Raider: Underworld is the first Tomb Raider game designed to reflect the physical athleticism and real-world skills required of a world-class adventurer… Tomb Raider: Underworld depicts Lara as we have never seen her before with movements and skills reminiscent of a highly skilled gymnast.”

The game will ship this November, which means the next film installment will probably follow shortly after.

Alison Carroll Biography

Alison Carroll, age 23, hails from Croydon. She was working as a British golf club receptionist before winning the role. Unlike the Lara Croft’s that came before her, Alison does not have a modeling background, but her measurements look like she could have one in the future.

She does, however, have 12 years of experience in gymnastics. Carroll says she has performed in front of thousands before while representing Great Britain, so she feels prepared for this role. Alison is also a coach where she recently choreographed the routine for the junior team that won the British National Championships. She will now take on a serious exercise regime, receive SAS survival training, learn about weapons and get a crash course in archaeology.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and I am really looking forward to embracing Lara’s world” said Alison Carroll. “This is my dream job - I have always wanted to be an action hero and hope to be able to use my gymnastic ability to perform all of Lara’s stunts. It is slightly daunting but I am really excited at the same time.”

Carroll’s goal is to parlay this gig into film roles, maybe even playing Lara herself. You can see more photos and video of Alison decked out like Lara Croft below.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Date Moved

The latest Harry Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” has a new release date. The movie was set to open November 21st, but Warner Brothers has changed the date to July 17, 2009. Somebody forgot to tell Entertainment Weekly about the date being moved.

Harry Potter

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Date Moved

The August 22-29 issue will feature Daniel Radcliffe on the cover. There will be a six-page spread inside, all in preparation for the original November release. There is, however, information on the change of date when you read the on line version of the magazine. EW is not the only one pondering the date change.

Warners’ decision to change the movie’s date was “a very curious move,” according to Jeff Bock of industry research firm Exhibitor Relations, especially considering how few family-friendly films will be released this fall. With the lack of competition, and because the “Half-Blood Prince” was one of the most well-received in the series, he thinks it could have done “upwards of $300 million.”

The film will now go up against “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and the much talked about “Twilight” will take over Harry’s original November release date. So what’s behind the change? Warner Brothers denies production delays or writers strikes as the reason and now conspiracy theories are cropping up. Roger Friedman might have the most curious one.

“Radcliffe appears naked in the play, on stage, and has sex in it as well. That’s not the image Warner Bros. wants associated with bespectacled Harry, who remains chaste and virginal.”

Whatever the reason, there is no doubt Potter fans are disappointed. But for now, you can see pictures of the film’s stars below.

Movies Releasing Friday - August 15

It actually looks to be a pretty good movie week, all things considered. I was just reading a Slate article about how August shouldn’t even be a month anymore because it’s so awful and nothing happens in August. One of the arguments was the lack of good movie releases, but the movies releasing Friday put that argument to the test. We’ve got “Tropic Thunder” (finally!), “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, “Mirrors”, and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”.

Tropic Thunder

“Tropic Thunder” Releases Friday

Tropic Thunder

People have been waiting for this movie for about a year, ever since news dropped that Owen Wilson would be replaced by Matthew McConaughey after being hospitalized. Ben Stiller recently opened up about Wilson’s struggles, saying, “It’s impossible to understand that kind of pain – depression or anything like that – until you’re in it.”

The movie is about a group of actors who think they’re filming a war flick, but who’ve been dropped off in the middle of an actual battlefield after their diva-like antics drive the director over the edge. And so far, the early reviews have been good, with one moviegoer saying,

Tropic Thunder makes you laugh. It’s just that simple. They aren’t the smartest laughs… they aren’t high brow laughs… but oh my goodness they are laughs nonetheless. This is a FUNNY flick.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Not much to say about this one - if you’re a Star Wars fan you’ll probably see it; if you’re not, you probably won’t. It’s an animated feature-length film building on the Star Wars franchise. It’s an involved plot with lots of characters all important in their own way: the Clone Wars are sweeping the galaxy, Anakin and Ahsoka end up in a battle against Jabba the Hutt, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda lead the clone army in battle, and the Separatists further their control of the Galactic Republic. Get ready for the fun.

Mirrors

Starring Kiefer Sutherland, Paula Patton and Amy Smart, “Mirrors” is a horror film about a guy who takes over as watchman in a building that has all kinds of mirrors. The freaky part starts when he realizes that the reflections are taking on lives of their own, and even follow him home, so that his son’s and wife’s reflections also join in on the action. Viewers are calling it “scary but predictable”.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is the latest Woody Allen film to star his muse, Scarlett Johansson. The film also stars Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. In a fashion that only Woody Allen can do, this movie is a love triangle like no other. Two women on vacation in Spain fall for the same painter, but his ex-wife isn’t exactly out of the picture yet. If you like Woody Allen and you don’t mind Scarlett Johansson, I’m guessing you won’t be disappointed.

See the trailers for the movies below.

Angelina Jolie Is Edwin A. Salt

“Edwin A. Salt”, a spy movie that sounds just similar enough to the Bourne trilogy, is about a CIA officer accused of being a spy who must elude the chasers long enough to establish innocence and reunite with family in the process. The interesting thing about it though is that Angelina Jolie has just replaced Tom Cruise as the title character (whose name, I’m guessing, will now be changed … hopefully to something other than Edwina).

Angelina Jolie 10

Angelina Jolie

Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer is now redrafting the script to change the main character from male to female. At least he has a while to get the work done; the film is not scheduled for release until 2010.

Earlier this year there was already speculation of a role change for the Salt movie, but at least that one played along the same gender lines. At the time, it was rumored that Will Smith had been approached for the lead, but film sources insisted that was simply untrue. They said then that the script was still being rewritten to Cruise’s specifications. I hope Wimmer is getting paid by the draft on this thing.

“Tropic Thunder” is Ben Stiller’s New Movie

Ben Stiller stars in the new movie, “Tropic Thunder,” along with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jack Black. The film has recently come under fire from disability advocate groups because there is concern over “negative portrayal of people with intellectual disabilities.”

Ben Stiller

“Tropic Thunder” is Ben Stiller’s New Movie

Advocate groups such as The Special Olympics, Arc of the United States, the National Down Syndrome Congress and the American Association of People with Disabilities among others met with film studio executives to voice their concerns. One example of their protest deals with Ben Stiller’s character. The word “retard” is used multiple times in reference to him.

“We are asking people not to go to the movie and hope to bring a consciousness to people about using derogatory words about this population,” said Peter Wheeler, spokesman for Special Olympics.”

“Tropic Thunder” is set to release Wednesday, August 13th. On Monday about 50 people gathered to protest at it’s Los Angeles premiere. The group chanted and held signs saying “Eliminate the R word.”

“That will be the start of a nationwide protest,” said Wheeler. “We will continue to be vocal about the destructive effect of this film.”

Dreamworks acknowledged the concerns of the groups and said they looked forward to working with them in the future but no changes would be made to this particular film. Despite the controversy, it’s getting some great reviews. You can see the trailer for “Tropic Thunder” below.
