Rick Astley Writing Movie Musical

Rick Astley is “Never Gonna Give Up” his musical career. See photos and video of Rick Astley below.

His revival in recent years was based on people being tricked into seeing him, or “Rickrolled” via an Internet meme but this 80s pop star is counting on fans buying actual tickets. He will not only be headlining the Here and Now tour but he’s also writing a movie musical.

Currently titled, ‘New York Cowboy’, the movie musical is the story of a boy from a small town who moves to New York City in the 80s. Astley told guardian.co.uk how it came to be:

“My wife’s now a movie producer so I read a lot of scripts and I’m really passionate about films. One day I thought, ‘Well, why don’t I write one?’ And it turned into a musical – but not for the stage.”

Astley says he “hooked up with a guy in California”, he told the Times, and after writing a script the two are now seeking an agent.

“I’m not fooling myself – nothing may come of it and I totally understand that, but as a process I have loved it. When you’re writing frothy pop songs the lyrics can be a bit ‘whatever’, they are hooky and you just sing them because they work. But writing these songs … Do they call that a libretto?”

‘He’s Just Not That Into You’ Wins Weekend Box Office

It was definitely a chick weekend. The New Line Cinema film, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’, starring Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston was the top earner raking in $27.5 Million.

Twentieth Century Fox’s action picture, ‘Taken’ did well by coming in second with an estimated $20.3 million. That should push the total gross for the film, starring Liam Neeson as a father trying to rescue his kidnapped child, to $53.4 million.

‘Coraline,’ the animated 3-D film about an 11 year-old girl who enters into an alternate universe by Focus Features, rounded out the top three money makers at $16.3 Million. It is now the third highest-grossing weekend for a “stop motion” animated film, behind the 2005 release ‘Corpse Bride,’ which turned in $19.1 million.

Steve Martin’s ‘Pink Panther 2,’ from MGM and Columbia Pictures, landed in a disappointing fourth place with $12 Million in its opening weekend. That compares with a $20-million opening weekend for Steve Martin’s first ‘Pink Panther’ film.

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ with Kevin James came in fifth with $11 million as audiences continued to find it humorous, with a domestic gross so far at $97 Million.

Land of the Lost Movie Trailer

Universal has released a full length trailer for Land of the Lost on Subwayfreshbuzz.com. It’s basically an extended version of the teaser that played during the Super Bowl. We get to see more of the fantastical land in the alternative universe Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell), Will Stanton (Danny McBride), and Holly (Anna Friel) get transported to: a realm ruled by dinosaurs, monkey-men called Pakuni, and the murderous Sleestak.

Director Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’) says he fought to keep the human shape of the Sleestak from Sid & Marty Krofft’s original production, and not give into the urge to render them as spindly computerized beings. In the ’70s TV show, they were guys in lime-green pajamas — and looked it. The Sleestak are much sleeker now, but the film is largely a comedy, so the guy-in-a-suit look has its charms, Silberling says:

“There is a sense of humor that I loved from the original show that can only come from an actor trying to negotiate the suit. If it became CG, they’d be too perfect. For the Sleestak to remain in people’s memories, it tells you that it was about who was in the suit.”

The movie is set to release in theaters June 5, 2009.

Candy Land: The Movie

Variety reports that Universal Pictures is getting ready to turn the cultural icon boardgame, Candy Land, into a movie. The Hasbro game will get morphed into a feature film by ‘Tropic Thunder’ writer Etan Cohen, and will be directed by Kevin Lima, who most recently brought us ‘Enchanted.’

Candy Land is a popular children’s board game and is woven around a simple story line about finding the lost king of Candy Land. The board consists of a winding, linear track made of 134 spaces, most of which are red, green, blue, yellow, orange or violet. The remaining few spaces are named locations such as Candy Cane Forest and Gum Drop Mountain, or characters like Queen Frostine and Gramma Nutt. The game was designed in the 1940s by Eleanor Abbott, while she was recovering from polio in San Diego, California. The game was bought by Milton Bradley Company (now owned by Hasbro) and first published in 1949. Hasbro produces several versions of the game and treats it as a brand. For example, they market Candy Land puzzles, a travel version, a PC game, and a handheld electronic version. A December, 2005 article in Forbes magazine analyzed the most popular American toys by decade, with help from the Toy Industry Association. Candy Land led the list for the 1940-1949 decade.

No word yet on when the film will go into production, but the proposed movie has been described as “comedy and family fare.”

January Biggest Box Office Ever

04 13 4 Box Office web

Box office numbers are in for the first month 2009, and despite the bad economy, there’s good news: Last month was the biggest January in box office history, according to Media by Numbers. Films like ‘Gran Torino’ and ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop,’ contributed to the cumulative box office gross of $1.03 billion, the first time box office numbers hit over a billion ever. That total represents an 18.6 percent gain over a year ago (when the January sum was about $867 million), but it doesn’t account for increases in ticket prices or inflation.

Here’s a summary of the biggest box office heroes for January:

For the week: Jan 26-Feb 1
With an unexpectedly big gross of $24.6 million, Liam Neeson’s kidnapping thriller ‘Taken’ was the victor at the box office on Super Bowl weekend.

For the week: Jan 19-25

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ finished at No. 1 for the second consecutive weekend, with a $21.5 million gross, bringing the comedy’s 10-day sum to $64.8 million.

For the week: Jan 12-17
Kevin James’ comedy, ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’, won the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, grossing $33.8 million–a total that far exceeded expectations.

For the week: Jan 5-11
Seventy-eight-year-old Clint Eastwood was a big draw at the box office–in fact, he’s bigger than ever. The actor-director’s latest action-drama, ‘Gran Torino’, was No. 1 on the first competitive weekend of 2009, grossing $29 million. That’s the highest single-weekend total of Eastwood’s six-decade Hollywood career.

Melissa Leo is ‘Frozen River’ Actress

Meet Melissa Leo, the Academy Award Nominated actress from ‘Frozen River.’ Read her biography below and see photos, and video.

Jane Doe 2 1

Melissa Leo told the New York Times, of her Academy Award nomination for her role in ‘Frozen River’ as a single mother determined to provide a better life for her children:

“It is such a great thing, that you can walk around with your story, get your little money together and make a film and then end up there being counted along with all the big shots. I can’t think of any other industry, or any other country, where that seems possible.”

The indie picture only played in seven cinemas in L.A., New York and Denver when it first screened to the public in August 2008 but, its status as 2008 Sundance Film Festival Winner gave the film critical attention. Richard Schickel of Time Magazine writes about Leo’s performance:

“You can see it in her eyes, in her wiry body’s alertness to both danger and opportunity. The reserve in Leo’s performance, the way it earns our sympathy without asking for it, is screen acting of the highest order.”

Melissa Chessington Leo, also known as Margaret May II or Margaret May was born September 14, 1960 in New York City, New York; the daughter of Peggy, a teacher, and Arnold Leo, an editor and a fisherman. Her parents split when she was nine, with Peggy taking custody of Leo and moving to Putney, VT. Her mother moved to London, where Leo developed an affinity for theater. When her mother returned home, Leo then 16 years old, was allowed to remain in the U.K. to pursue her studies. Leo returned to the U.S. two years later, earned her GED and enrolled at the State University of New York at Purchase.

Leo left in her junior year in search of acting work, eventually securing a role on the ABC soap ‘All My Children’, for which she won a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1985. She began working on TV movies and guest shots, and along the way, entered into a tumultuous relationship with character actor John Heard, with whom she had a son in 1987. Leo scored the female lead opposite A-list stars William Hurt and Timothy Hutton in the film ‘A Time of Destiny’ (1988), before spending a season on ABC’s ensemble Western, ‘The Young Riders’ (1989-1992). Leo next fell into indie films–notably two with Henry Jaglom – including ‘Venice/Venice’ (1992) and ‘Last Summer in the Hamptons’ (1995), as well as a prominent role in the television sequel to ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939), ‘Scarlett’ (CBS, 1994).

In 1993, Leo secured regular work by donning frumpy clothes and reading a male character’s part to duly impress the producers of the new NBC drama, ‘Homicide: Life on the Street.’ The groundbreaking show debuted with Leo amidst an ensemble, including Andre Braugher, Ned Beatty, Richard Belzer and Clark Johnson, which examined memorable characters amidst the tragic waste of urban America. Leo played the no-nonsense Kay Howard in a way few women were seen on television. The harsh realism of the show garnered two Emmys and a Peabody award for best television drama in its first season.

But with ratings dropping even with critical acclaim, producers eventually switched veteran actors for younger, sexier talent and Leo’s character was written out for the 1997-98 season. Reportedly circumstances behind her departure were also the escalating battles with her ex-boyfriend, Heard, who had lost a lawsuit over custody of their son who beginning in 1996, he became increasingly violent. Leo returned for a 2000 reunion, ‘Homicide: The Movie.’

In 2003, she gave a powerful performance as the wife of an addict in ‘21 Grams,’ earning her a nomination as Best Supporting Actress from the L.A. Film Critics Association. She raised critical eyebrows again in ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada’ (2005) then she did ‘Hollywood Dreams’ (2006) and ‘Black Irish’ (2007). In 2008, she graduated from mostly supporting roles to major indie limelight as the critically lauded lead in ‘Frozen River’ (2008).

Transformers 2 Trailer: Super Bowl TV Commercial

Here is the new Transformers 2 Super Bowl TV spot which debuts during the big game on February 1, 2009 and has been released online. See photos and the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie trailer video here.

shia labeouf 1megan fox 1

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2007 movie Transformers will be released in theaters on June 26, 2009. It’s the second live action movie featuring the hugely popular Hasbro toy franchise. Once again, Michael Bay is the director and Steven Spielberg is the executive producer, with screenwriters Ehren Kruger, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Shia LaBeouf also returns, reprises the role of Sam Witwicky, who is a human being caught in the war between Autobots and Decepticons. Also returning are Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, and John Turturro. By sequel standards, that’s quite a cast reunion, and it has added to the buzz and excitement as fans await the new movie.

In the sequel, Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) are attacked by Decepticons when Sam learns about the origins of the Transformers and their ancient history on Earth. As they attempt to capture Sam to acquire the knowledge, an international coalition including the U.S. military unite with Autobots to fight back against the villainous Decepticons.

Thus, the size and cope of the battle has escalated, encompassing many countries, including Egypt. It’s clear from the new Transformers 2 teaser trailer that this is going to be a colossal battle.

In a recent interview, screenwriter Roberto Orci discussed the sequel and what fans may expect.

“It’s an extreme [jump] from the first one,” he says. “The outrageous, crazy humor is more outrageous, but then so is the serious side of it and so is the stakes of the Transformers plot and the seriousness with which some of their mythology is treated.”

Director Michael Bay, in a recent update, has confirmed that not only will there be many more robots in the sequel, they will be “really really unique.”

Here are several photos from the movie. More photos and the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Super bowl trailer video are below.
