J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated Star Trek movie will be in theaters on May 8, 2009. The Super Bowl TV commercial features virtually all new footage, previously not seen in the other theatrical trailer.
The movie is a prequel in the Star Trek universe, showing the classic characters in their Star Fleet Academy days. This new screen adaptation of the enduring Gene Roddenberry franchise stars Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Rounding out the iconic cast of characters are Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Simon Pegg as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. (See side-by-side comparison photos of the original cast and new cast here.) Eric Bana stars as Nero, the Romulan nemesis in the movie.
Leonard Nimoy makes a celebrated cameo appearance, reprising his legendary role as Mr. Spock. In a previous trailer, he is shown at the very end, delivering his signature line, “Live Long and Prosper.”
The new trailer, brief as it is, shows us plenty of action, including the young James Kirk getting himself in a bar fight (are we surprised?!). The special effects and scenes of San Francisco of the future (where Star Fleet Academy is located) are all top notch.
