Mel Gibson’s seven year absence from the movie biz has finally come to an end with his upcoming debut as homicide detective Thomas Craven in the Edge of Darkness.

The Martin Campbell directed flick, which some are calling the next Taken, stars Gibson as a detective and father looking for justice after witnessing the death of his own daughter, played by Bojana Novakovic. Also appearing in the Edge will be Ray Winstone, Danny Huston and Shawn Roberts.

As described by Warner Brothers, the Edge of Darkness centers around “Thomas Craven is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, twenty-four year-old Emma, is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But he soon suspects otherwise, and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter’s secret life and her killing. His investigation leads him into a dangerous, looking glass world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder – and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh who has been sent in to clean up the evidence. Craven’s solitary search for answers about his daughter’s death transforms into an odyssey of emotional discovery and redemption.”

Filming for the Edge of Darkness took place in Boston and was written by William Monahan (The Departed) and Andrew Bovell (When the Rain Stops Falling).

Edge of Darkness will hit theaters on January, 29, 2010. For now you can check out the trailer video below.
