The documentary “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama” has been snagged by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, and will air on HBO. Sony holds all of the media right (apart from U.K. television) as well as the home entertainment rights to film.
In November HBO acquired the other U.S. rights to the documentary film. The documentary will follow everything from the announcement of the former senator’s candidacy, to President Obama’s historic inauguration.
The film was produced by Edward Noton’s Class 5 Films, and was directed by Amy Rice and Alicia Sams. It shows promise to be a captivating documentary of the historic campaign, similar to the Clinton documentary “The War Room;” Except with a historic cultural movement thrown into the mix.
Variety, describes the film saying that it documents Obama from the time he announced his campaign, to his inauguration. It will also feature plenty of exclusive footage.
This type of film typically would only be intended for political enthusiasts, but with Barack Obama’s “rockstar” status, Sony may very well have a hit on their hands.
