Elizabeth Smart made an appearance at the California Governor and First Lady’s Conference on Women. Smart, who was kidnapped in 2002 at the age of fourteen years old, shared with others just how she made it through her horrible and unthinkable nightmare for nine months before being found.
Smart has not only caught the public eye for her horror story but for her incredible perspective and strength that she has brought to her situation. After being kidnapped in her home by knife point and repeatedly raped for nine months, several times a day, and drugged, Elizabeth Smart refuses to let her captors, Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Eileen Barzee, take anymore from her!
“I have just never let it hold me back, and I have gone on to do everything, so far, that I have wanted to do, and I think that’s so important,” Smart stated. “We all have our trials, and we all experience hard times, but I don’t think we should ever let it disable us from what we want to do.”
Through out the daily torture and months at the hands of Mitchell, who used religion as his reasoning, Smart says that family and faith is what kept her going. She is an example for all! Smart’s attackers have yet to stand trial for their despicable acts after being deemed incompetent. This November Mitchell will be tried again for his inhumane and disgusting acts.
Elizabeth Smart on Ordeal says - “I know that we do have angels on the other side that we don’t see. We’re never truly left alone in our darkest hour.”
