English actress Emma Watson, who rose to fame after playing the ultra efficient, book worm Hermione Granger in the popular Harry Potter franchise, has been cast in a lead role in novelist Stephen Chbosky’s upcoming film The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
The twenty-year old joins the likes of Jack and Bobby star Logan Lerman in the racy picture that has been adapted for the big screen from Chobsky’s novel by the same name. The book was published back in 1999. The Perks of Being a Wallflower delves into adolescents, following a shy and quiet teenager and his world around him. The story touches on subjects such as sex, drug use, suicide and homosexuality.
“An incredibly accurate portrayal of early adolescence, this book consists of letters written by Charlie to an unidentified person during his freshman year of high school. Prone to depression, shy, introverted, on the fringes in everything, Charlie is a wallflower who, with the help of friends Samantha and Patrick, comes to terms with life and learns to interact. Although Perks covers just about every tough issue known to teen, the book has its moments of humor, and the tragic aspects are handled so well that it comes off as realistic rather than melodramatic or soap-operatic. A masterful book.” -Ivy, Resident Scholar
Watson fans should be thrilled to see the performer move on what with the Harry Potter installments coming to and end. It will also be quite interesting to see the brunette stepping out of her normal acting territory as Harry Potter’s sidekick. So far no other actors have been cast in the coming of age flick. We’ll keep you posted.
