The report in Variety, claims that director David Fincher (photo above, right) — director of the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Panic Room, Zodiac — will helm a forthcoming movie about the origins of the hugely popular social networking site Facebook, and indeed, is tentatively titled, appropriately “The Social Network.”
Reportedly the movie will chronicle the development of the popular networking site which was first established by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 while he was a sophomore at Harvard which has seen a meteoric rise as a site with a membership of more than 200 million and growing, as well as one of the most visited Web sites in the world.
The scribe of the Facebook movie? Aaron Sorkin (picture above, left) who created the hit series The West Wing, is to script the movie, as an adaptation of the forthcoming book from Ben Mezrich: “The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal.” The book will be released on July 14, 2009. Ben Mezrich is the bestselling author of Bringing Down the House which was brought to the big screen as “21.”
The Facebook movie Aaron Sorkin connection is not a new one; last August the celebrated playwright (A Few Good Men) and screenplay writer (The American President) established a special page on Facebook when he was first attached to the project.
According to Variety, producers include: Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti as well as the actor Kevin Spacey.
The Daily News, citing reports from CNET News (which in turn quotes an unnamed industry source) says that casting for the The Facebook Movie The Social Networking has begun. Under consideration: Michael Cera (Superbad) and Shia LaBeouf (Transformers) are among the actors under consideration to portray Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
According to the CNET News industry source, Michael Cera is said to be “a top choice” because he is “particularly likeable” to audiences. The publication goes on to state that author Ben Mezrich is rumored to portray Zuckerberg in a negative manner, as “an obnoxious nerd” and it is hoped that Cera may make him more “sympathetic.”
