The tagline for this movie is, “Every story ever written is just waiting to become real.” The story is about Meggie Folcharts (Eliza Hope Bennett) who discovers that her father, Mo Folcharts (Brendan Fraser), has an amazing talent to bring characters from books to life and must try to stop a freed villain, Capricorn (Andy Serkis), from destroying them all. With the help of her father, her Great Aunt (Helen Mirren), and a storybook’s hero, they attempt to find a way to return the villain and the hero back to the book and restore peace to their world. Early reviews aren’t that great for this film full of special effects and a muddled plot.

The Los Angeles Times says:

“The convoluted fantasy adventure film is no page turner.”

The New York Times says:

“A movie that can produce the image of Helen Mirren astride a unicorn has some claim on the audience’s interest, and a movie that can make that image seem perfectly uninteresting is in some serious trouble.”

Salon says:

“Brendan Fraser stars in this fantasy-adventure about the power of books. But where is the magic?”

From the sound of it, maybe it’s better to save the $9.00 admission and wait for this movie to come out on DVD.
