This Tuesday, get ready to hit up the Red Box. Included in the DVDs releasing this week is “Knowing”, the science fiction thriller starring Nicolas Cage. Also hitting your local DVD rental source are “Push” and “The Unborn”.
“Knowing”
When Nicolas Cage finds a list of numbers, they turn out to be a prediction of every major world disaster. He must decipher the clues to prevent the next one from happening, and save the world in this “heart-pounding race against time”. But as exciting as that sounds, the reviews aren’t living up. Entertainment Weekly gives it a D+, saying,
Knowing is a trash-compactor hodgepodge of Deep Impact, The Number 23, Close Encounters, and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Too often, though, it’s the movie that stands still, as it counts down to one of those ”mind-blowing” digital cataclysms that dissipates the moment you walk up the aisle.
“Push”
Dakota Fanning is back and starring alongside Djimon Hounsou, Chris Evans, and Camilla Belle in this action-thriller about a team of paranormal operatives who can move things telepathically and kill without even touching the victim. The Division is an entity that has been trying to round up all of the people born with these powers to turn them into super-soldiers. The movie turns into a three-way chase, with The Division, some other super-powered people, and a gang of men, all after Camilla Belle. However, it seems that “Push” is nothing but same-old, same-old when it comes to super-human tricks. Aside from one or two new powers, the rest appears to be old hat.
“The Unborn”
“The Unborn” tells the story of a college student who learns that her twin brother died in the womb, and he is now back to haunt her. Drawn into the story is a lesson in Jewish mythology, as we learn about a dybbuk - a demonic spirit of a dead person that takes possession of the living. Odette Yustman enrolls the help of a Holocaust survivor and a rabbi to rid herself of the evil spirit. But for the third time this week, the movie appears to fall flat, and even borders on the edge of unintentional comedy.
