Singing diva Mariah Carey is trying out her acting chops again in the new movie Precious - and to much better results than her last outings in Glitter and Wise Girls. Read the rest of the story and see the trailer below.
Mariah Carey is having quite the year-ish. Her marriage has long outlasted what the celeb gossip polls predicted, she had a hit album (who didn’t love ‘Touch My Body’??), and now her latest acting role is the talk of the town - and in a good way this time. Unlike her previous films Glitter and Wise Girls (the first of which racked up five Razzie nominations), Mariah’s performance is being heralded in the Oprah and Tyler Perry backed ‘Precious’. The movie, based on the book ‘Push’ by Sapphire, is a story about an HIV-positive teenager in Harlem who is pregnant with her second child and suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father. Mariah goes without makeup, and dons a terrible wig and dowdy outfits to play a social worker that Precious sees in order to collect state benefits. Also starring in the film are Mo’Nique, Lenny Kravitz, and Sherri Sheppard.
Of the gritty drama, Mariah says:
“I was just honored to be a part of it. It’s really something that’s so strong and different and I think that it’s really going to enlighten a lot of people and help a lot of people.”
The movie, currently at the Cannes Film Festival, has been well received by audiences - it won the Grand Jury and Audience awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Precious was picked up by Lionsgate, and is set for release in November 2009.
