Legendary filmmaker (and legendary eyebrow owner) Martin Scorsese is finally getting to make the Frank Sinatra biopic that he’s been flirting with on and off for decades. He is teaming up with Universal Pictures and Mandalay Pictures, and will direct and produce the film. Phil Alden Robinson has been tapped to write the screen play.

Execs from Universal and Mandalay have been quietly working on this project for two years, and have secured the life and music rights from Frank Sinatra Enterprises, which is a joint venture of the Sinatra Estate and Warner Music Group. They said getting the rights to his life and music wasn’t an easy task. Describing it as “very complicated,” Cathy Schulman said:

“The responsibility we are taking on to tell his story — that would cause anyone to be very careful about who they grant these rights to,” she added. “Everyone knows that Marty Scorsese is a final-cut director. So there had to be a lot of trust that he would tell this story in a way that didn’t destroy (Sinatra’s) memory.”

No actor has been attached to the film yet, but execs say Leonardo DiCaprio is the “obvious” choice given his awesomely hott babyface and his ability to both seduce the ladies and be pretty scary when need be. Also, Scorsese clearly has a strong love for Leo, as he has cast him in several of his recent films - Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, and Shutter Island, which is currently in post-production. Since execs scored the music rights to Ole Blue Eyes’ catalogue, Leo wouldn’t need to have much musical ability to play the legendary actor and singer.

With Franky’s many romances, possible mafia connections, and famous friendships, this definitely promises to be an amazing movie.
