One of the most beloved children’s books of all time is making its way to the big screen much to the delight of lovers of the book across the world, and we have the trailer for Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which stars Jim Carrey, right here!
I haven’t read the book since I was much younger, but since I am a lover of penguins I remember being enamored with the story, especially since it is meant to be silly. Nobody does silly better than Jim Carrey, so this should be a great family movie.
While the movie is slightly different from the book, as most adaptations are, it still follows the same basic story. The film follows the life of Tom Popper, a painter who has been oblivious to the important things in his life. That is, until he is gifted a penguin which he keeps in his freezer. Soon, that one little bird turns into 6, and his apartment becomes a snowy playground for his new housemates.
The most decided difference is that in the book, the Poppers are very poor. After he unexpectedly ends up with his new feathered brood, Mr. Popper decides to train them and take them on tour to make some money, which presents its own set of hijinks. In the film, however, Carrey’s Popper is pretty well off and has seemingly neglected his family on his climb to success, and the penguins bring him back in touch with what is important. There seems to be a part in the trailer when he is teaching the birds how to dance, but it’s not immediately apparent whether the performing birds are a major part of the plot or not.
The movie was filmed on a refrigerated set and used live Gentoo penguins, though its obvious they did opt for CGI during some of the more complicated scenes.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins is set for a June 17th release and looks like it will be a cute family flick, because who doesn’t like penguins?! We’ll let you know what we thought of the movie when it comes out, but in the meantime check out the trailer for it below!
