The United Nations Children’s Fund appointed Orlando Bloom Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of his support of children’s rights around the world.

Bloom confirmed the news on Monday and said in a statement:

“I look forward to working with UNICEF as they continue to make the world a better place for children. UNICEF doesn’t just deliver humanitarian aid, which is what they are known for all over the world. They also educate and provide tools which help women and children face challenges specific to their own lives. I responded to how UNICEF works as much as I did to the work itself. I look forward to learning more and to supporting UNICEF any way I can.”

The Lord of the Rings actor had traveled to Russia, Nepal and Sarajevo in support of the organization. A Public Service Announcement by Bloom will start airing this week, revealing the seriousness of clean and attainable water.

Anne M. Veneman, executive director for United Nations Children’s Fund, noted, “We are proud to have Orlando Bloom as one of the strong voices for vulnerable children.”

Bloom joins the likes of Hollywood heavyweights Roger Moore, David Beckham, Audrey Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave who have previously lent their hand to the organization.
