In a role that some say could lead to an Oscar nomination, Oswalt plays a “parking garage attendant who happens to be the New York Giants’ biggest fan.” One day, this Giants diehard has a run-in with one of his idolized players, whose poster even hangs by his bed.

It all starts when Oswalt’s character Paul and his buddy see one of the star players, Quantrell Bishop, at a gas station in New York. Because Paul is such a big fan of the linebacker, he and his friend follow him to a strip club in hopes of meeting him.

A complete misunderstanding leads to a confrontation between the men and the Giant’s player, which lands Paul in the hospital. From there the story takes a dramatic turn, really showcasing Oswalt’s ability to portray some depth of character.

Paul’s family life is affected, and of course his loyalty to the team, as some pressure him to pursue legal action against the athlete as a result of his injuries.

Robert Siegel, the man behind The Wrestler, wrote and directed the film, which reportedly has a combination of laughs and emotion.

Big Fan, starring Patton Oswalt, is now showing.
