Following the 2008 crash that killed one man and injured his wife, screenwriter Roger Avary, who pleaded guilty, has been sentenced to one year in jail for manslaughter.
Avary, who co-engineered the big screen hits Pulp Fiction and Beowulf, was driving while intoxicated in Southern California after dinner out with friends visiting from Italy. According to reports he was going as fast as 100 miles per hour and was over the legal limit, causing him to crash into a telephone pole.
When police arrived at the scene they found Roger Avary’s wife, Gretchen, thrown from the vehicle with thirty-four year old Andreas Zini killed in the crash. Avary first pleaded not guilty before changing his plea in an effort to put the unfortunate events behind him. The screenwriter will serve a one-year jail sentence with five years probation for manslaughter and pay out $4.1 million for a civil suit.
“Roger Avary is a decent man and a good man who has always strived to do the right thing in his life,” stated Avary’s attorney. “He never meant any harm to anyone, and this was just a terrible accident.”
Roger Avary was sentenced this past Tuesday in a Ventura Court. The victim’s parents and widow were present for the sentence hearing.

One year is no big deal. He’ll be out before the ink dries on the victim’s funeral papers.
