The 24-year-old middle distance runner Shannon Rowbury suffered a misfortune in the first-round heat in the Women’s 1500 meter race on Tuesday August 18 in Berlin at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships. She fell at around the 200-meter mark of the race but was able to get up quickly and catch up with the rest of the runners, only to be cut off again and finish the race in 11th place with a time of 4:10.30 which was not sufficient to qualify for the next round.

In an interview after the race, she said:

“I’ve been in some jostles before but I don’t think I have ever gone down before….Usually when I get tripped up, I have a chance to regain my footing and keep going. When you go down all of a sudden, you don’t know how to react. It really felt like a bad dream.

The USATF (USA Track and Field) filed a protest of the race on Shannon Rowbury’s behalf with the IAAF (International Amateur Athletics Federation). Approximately two hours later came the announcement of the result of the Shannon Rowbury appeal; she was reinstated and will compete in the 1500m final.

Shannon Rowbury attended Duke University and is presently under contract with Nike and is presently based in San Francisco, California. She competed in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics in in the Women’s 1500 meter and finished in 7th place. She won the U.S. championships in June competing at that same distance.

That is the favorable outcome for the Shannon Rowbury appeal. More photos and video are below.
