The second season of Southland won’t be airing this year after all. The cop drama just got the axe before its season debut! Get the details here.
Former O.C. star Ben Mckenzie and the rest of the cast of the new series Southland have been given their pink slips. The NBC show was scheduled to kick off its sophomore season on October 23rd.
Instead they ended up being part of a joke for Jay Leno’s late night show:
“NBC’s ratings aren’t so hot. In fact — and this is true — this week the network canceled the show ‘Southland’ before it even came back on the air. Next thing you know they’ll be canceling shows before writers can even think of them.”
Leno took a crack at the network after it canned Southland and its six episodes that were ready to air. The show in NBC’s opinion was apparently “too dark and gritty” for its former 10pm time slot. So instead network execs have decided to replace the show with episodes of Dateline.
Of course Southland’s creator John Wells was upset about the decision to kill off the show before its season debut:
“I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success. We remain extremely proud of ‘Southland’ and are actively looking for another home for the series.”
In my opinion Southland was a good show that was just getting started. NBC really made a mistake. Tell us, what do you think about the network dropping Southland?

If it is true that it shold be a 10 PM show then the simple solution is to cancel Leno! I vote for that.
