Later this month, Warner Bros will release Zack Snyder’s latest action flick Sucker Punch. It’s like Charlie’s Angels but with two extra girls, more action, and some gore. The studio is ramping up their marketing campaign by releasing a new animated trailer for the film. It’s called The Trenches and it features original animation from Ben Hibon.
The Trenches was inspired by the world of Sucker Punch. The tone is the same and the film’s stars make a cameo towards the end of the video. It’s like a live action graphic novel!
Sucker Punch stars a group of talented young actresses including Emily Browning, who plays the main character, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jamie Chung. The film centers on the character Babydoll (Browning) and her entrance and pending escape from a mental institution. Due to her outlandish behavior, she gets locked up and is scheduled to receive a lobotomy.
With the odds against her, Babydoll falls into a fantastical world filled with fighter planes, tanks, and mechanical warriors. She’s joined by four of her peers: Blondie, Amber, Rocket, and Sweet Pea, and they embark on a life altering journey. In The Trenches, we get up close and personal with some of the forces the girls have to deal like the mechanical soldiers.
The video tells the story of a soldier who is killed in action during World War II. He’s rehabilitated and turned into a cyborg that’s programmed to stop the girls at any cost. It’s kind of like what happened in RoboCop but without the good intentions. We see the solider battling his old memories of family and happiness while in the field.
At the end of the short, we see the emergence of the Sucker Punch team from the POV of the mechanical soldier. They’re accompanied by music that sounds similar to the score from Inception, which is a nice addition. Does The Trenches make you feel sympathetic towards the enemy?
