The Titanic memorial cruise is set to sail off 100 years after the ship sunk. On April 15, 2012, the memorial cruise will set sail and follow the same course that the Titanic took, and will pay homage to the victims.
A cruise set to honor the passenger that died on the Titanic has been scheduled for 2012.
Like the Titanic, the Balmoral ship will leave from Southampton, England, on April 8. Over the course of the 12-night trip, passengers will take part in a memorial service and visit the cemeteries in Nova Scotia to remember the 1,517 people who lost their lives when the ship sunk.
The trip will come to an end in New York, which is where the Titanic was also scheduled to come to an end. Prices for the cruise start at $3,900, but it seems that the cruise has sold quite a bit already with the entire lower grade inside cabins having already sold out.
Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com, said the irony of the Titanic is “the boost that the tragedy has given to contemporary cruising. The fact that a ship sank and lots of passengers lost their lives has paled in the face of the romantic image that it portrays.”
A bit of information on the Balmoral ship: it is an older ship built in 1988, but was refurbished in 2007. It went from 615 feet to 714 feet during this time, where it also added 186 passenger and 53 crew cabins. It can hold 1,778 passengers. With this and its ten passenger accessible decks, it is the largest ship for Olsen Cruise Lines. In comparison, the Titanic was 882 ft 9 inches in length, cold hold 3547 passengers, and had 9 decks.
