The book’s fans have been waiting for this day. “Watchmen” is hitting shelves on DVD this week. Other Tuesday DVD releases include “Coraline” and “The Great Buck Howard”.
Watchmen
Based on the novel of the same name, “Watchmen” is the story of a group of superheros, but they’re not your ordinary guy-in-a-cape kind of superhero. At two hours forty-one minutes, the film publicly promised to stay true to the story. Though for the most part they succeeded, and fans appreciated it, the movie struggles to live up to the book. Still an interesting story, but maybe just better left on paper.
Coraline
When Coraline moves into a new home with her workaholic parents, she quickly becomes bored and begins to snoop around. Lo and behold, she happens upon a secret door, which leads to the Other World. The creepy part comes when she realizes that no one in the Other World has eyes - they’ve all been replaced with buttons. Coraline makes it her mission to find the eyes of the children. The film was praised for its animation, and the Blu-ray version is said to be fantastic.
The Great Buck Howard
John Malkovich is “The Great Buck Howard”, but the great acting doesn’t stop there. Father and son Tom and Colin Hanks also star in this film about a law school dropout who takes a job as the personal assistant of the eccentric illusionist. When his father finds out, he tries to get him to quit, but Buck has one more trick up his sleeve that can’t be missed. Emily Blunt also appears as Buck’s PR talent. From the sounds of it, the movie is a hit. A heartfelt look at old-school entertainment, the film is called “a smoothly, strongly appealing comedy.”
