Can you believe the first Lord of the Rings came out in 2001? Well it’s been ten years since the famous cast began the trilogy, so let’s have a look at where they are now!
For some, LOTR was a stepping stone to success. But for most, surprisingly, it was just a brief glimpse of stardom. Check out who did the best from the franchise below!
Elijah Wood – Frodo Baggins
Elijah didn’t get up to much before the Lord of the Rings, but the star of the trilogy definitely benefited from the role! He’s definitely taken some time off, but since the trilogy he’s starred in Sin City, Happy Feet, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Admittedly, it’s hard to picture the guy without imagining he’s only 4 feet tall, but there’s little (hehe) doubt he’s not better off after LOTR.
Sean Astin – Samwise Gamgee
Ah the ever embattled Samwise didn’t fare as well as his ring bearing friend. Prior to LOTR I think we’d all remember Sean from The Goonies, but his only noteworthy role after the films was a small role in 50 First Dates. Would you believe he’s 40-years-old now!?
Orlando Bloom – Legolas Greenleaf
Speaking of ageless wonders, how did LOTR affect Orlando Bloom’s career? Well, it pretty much started it. Before he was Legolas, Bloom had only done a few small TV roles. But before he was even done filming the third film, he’d already landed the role of Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean! We are forever grateful to Lord of the Rings for giving us our Efly man-hunk.
Ian McKellen – Gandalf
This man was in movies before most of the other cast was born. But most of us would admit to being completely oblivious to McKellen until he appeared as Magneto in 2000’s X-Men. So, with that success he landed the role of Gandalf in LOTR and the rest is history. Since the trilogy he’s done another two X-Men movies, and has already confirmed his role in the upcoming “Hobbit” movies.
Viggo Mortensen – Aragorn
Can you remember how many girls had a crush on Aragorn when these movies came out? One of the few men that always looks better with a beard, Viggo was a bit of a disappointment after the trilogy. He was good in Hidalgo, but the movie didn’t fare so well. Possibly the biggest flop of the franchise, sadly.
Liv Tyler – Arwen
Before LOTR it was Armageddon, and afterward she was the lead role in The Strangers. For Liv, the Lord of the Rings was just one of a long line of successes! But really, how can the daughter of Aerosmith’s Steve Tyler do any wrong?
Hugo Weaving – Elrond
Hugo’s a great actor and I loved him in LOTR, but I have to admit there was always a part of me waiting for him to say “Mr. Anderson.” Made famous by his groundbreaking role in The Matrix, Weaving has had much success since his stint as Elrond, starring in Transformers, Happy Feet, and all of the other Matrixes (Matrices?). You’ll be glad to hear he’s on board for The Hobbit too.
Where are the Lord of the Rings cast now? Well now you know. Who would you have liked to have seen do better from the famous trilogy? Let me know in the comment section!
