The Zac Efron Interview Magazine photo shoot puts the ‘High School Musical’ actor in a new, and quite mature light. Squeaky clean image begone! See photos, video and find out more here.
The 21-year-old actor appears in the April 2009 issue of Interview magazine in a provocative photo spread with a model. In one of the photos, the two are embracing in a sandbox and she is wearing nothing at all except traces of sand and mud which are neither large nor strategically placed. The striking black-and-white photograph is sure to be be talked about, as it cuts so strongly against perceptions of the young actor as a Disney movie teen heart throb. In real life, he is dating his ‘High School Musical’ costar Vanessa Hudgens and the couple frequently appears together on the red carpet.
The model has been revealed to be 20-year-old Lithuanian Edita Vilkeviciute.
Zac Efron talked about his motivation for the racy photos.
‘It was definitely different from anything I had ever done before. You know, everything I’ve done in the past has felt very safe, and it was great for a while, but now I’m looking for a place to take chances. I want to play with things.’
In wanting to branch into more mature roles and leave the teen age roles behind, he acknowledges that that is where one finds his fan base. He quipped, ‘Most of the directors I’d want to work with don’t even know who I am…Their daughters might.’
The Zac Efron Interview magazine cover reinforces the transition. He appears on the cover with a single caption, ‘Zac Efron is the Future.’ The interview is conducted by film director Gus Van Saint (’Milk’).
He goes on in the interview to reveal that it is not just teens who are devoted fans whom he calls ‘beautiful’ and ‘amazing.’ He shares the story of a determined mother of a fan.
“There was one, I was at this signing and there were stairs you had to walk up and everyone was coming one at a time. There was this mom that was in a wheelchair and her daughter came up and got an autograph. And the mom was like, ‘I want one too,’ so she stands right up from the wheelchair and walks right up on stage. I was like, ‘Of course, you can have whatever you want.’ I signed like ten things for her and she walked back down, sat back in her wheelchair and rolled away.”
Zac Efron appears in two forthcoming movies; Burr Steers’s ‘17 Again’ and and Richard Linklater’s ‘Me and Orson Wells.’ He has teen roles in both movies, in the former he is the 17-year-old version of ‘ the main character who gets his wish to relive his high school years and in the later movie, which is set in 1937, he plays a teenager hired to star in Orson Welles’ and John Houseman’s production of Julius Caesar at the legendary Mercury Theatre company.
